The Big Short

Title: The Big Short (movie)

The Big Short has been nominated for several Oscars, and I had high expectations for it. It delves into a depressing economic period of our nation's history, when Wall Street chicanery with mortgage markets and sub-prime loans created a national - and worldwide - economic crisis; with foreclosures at an all time high and a housing market that has never returned to pre-crisis levels. The film is very "talky", goes on and on about credit default swaps and even more arcane financial instruments (I was alternately bored and frustrated) and portrays no character or agency of redeeming value - neither the SEC, nor other market "watchdogs", nor the media. Boring and depressing.

Non-Fiction (based on true events); rated 2 out of 5.
