Title: The Homecoming

This book continues the Thunder Point series. We follow the previous characters' lives. A returning "prodigal son" comes home to become the police chief. We follow his story as he reunites with his lifelong best friend from whom he has been estranged for almost 20 years. This is another good read.

J.D. Robb's In Death series is incomparable, and we fans have been waiting on tenterhooks for the latest installment - this one, and it does not disappoint. Edgy, complex central character, NYPD Lieutenant - Homicide Eve Dallas, tracks a 50-year reign of horrible serial rapes by a brotherhood "club" originating at Yale. Second book in the Winter Street trilogy, takes place a year after the first book ends. Follows the romantic and career ups and downs of the Quinn family, engrossing characters who own, or return to, a Nantucket inn. One frustration - many plot lines are left hanging, presumably to be resolved in the trilogy's third book. However, there is no information online or in the author's web site, when the third book might make an appearance!

After the car accident she is left with a traumatic brain injury and a syndrome called "left neglect" in which she doesn't recognize anything to her left including parts of her body. I really enjoyed this book. It taught me a lot about a syndrome I had never heard of. In addition the main character basically had to create a new life for her and her family and though it wasn't the life she originally was striving for she had to come to terms with her limitations. Through rehabilitation and self discovery she began to focus on her abilities rather than her disabilities.

Although this book is fiction, it is based on historical facts of the period between 1854 - 1929 when young orphans from the East Coast were placed on "orphan trains" which would take them to the Midwest where they would be adopted. The author weaves the lives of one of these orphans,Vivian, and Molly, a 17-year-old in the foster system. Vivian is now 91-years-old and Molly is sent to her to do community work. The friendship between them develops and although a sad story evolves of Vivian's life as a child, the connection formed between Molly and Vivian is a warm and beautiful one and very heartwarming. Many of Anderson's plots center around women hiding out, running from, or in danger from husbands or ex-husbands who are emotionally or physically abusive, or just general ne'er do wells. She convinces the town's upstanding, principled (and gorgeous) deputy sheriff to engage in a "pretend marriage" with her, hoping that will bolster her custody case. Of course, real romance ensues.

I was slightly disappointed in this book compared with Plain's other novels.

The Big Short
Title: The Big Short (movie)
The Big Short has been nominated for several Oscars, and I had high expectations for it. It delves into a depressing economic period of our nation's history, when Wall Street chicanery with mortgage markets and sub-prime loans created a national - and worldwide - economic crisis; with foreclosures at an all time high and a housing market that has never returned to pre-crisis levels. The film is very "talky", goes on and on about credit default swaps and even more arcane financial instruments (I was alternately bored and frustrated) and portrays no character or agency of redeeming value - neither the SEC, nor other market "watchdogs", nor the media. Boring and depressing.

Sun Kissed
Title: Sun Kissed
Author: Catherine Anderson
One of the first of Anderson's series covering the Harrigan/Kendrick/Coulter ranching clans. This offering revolves around the youngest (and only female) Harrigan, Samantha; the mystery and suspense surrounding the poisoning of her beloved and valuable horses; and her developing relationship with the new equine vet, Tucker Coulter.
Please note: parts of this book are not for the squeamish or faint of heart. They go into great and graphic detail about horse consequences of bone and digestive poisoning; and one horrific scene details the agonizing poisoning deaths of a mare and her new foal.

Phantom Waltz
Title: Phantom Waltz
Author: Catherine Anderson
The best part of this novel (another in Anderson's Ranching-Horsey series) is that the heroine (and principal love interest) is a wheelchair-bound paraplegic -- Bethany Coulter was paralyzed in a riding competition eight years ago and has shunned riding (and romance) since then. Her walls relating to both are broken down by rancher Ryan Kendrick. Book contains interesting insights into how paraplegics cope with the world, including intimacy challenges.
