The first novel in Brockmann's Bartlett Brothers series, the plot concerns the efforts of the oldest brother, Cal, to uncover the real fate of his younger brother, Liam, reported killed in prison in a turbulent, warring South American country two years ago. Along the way, he meets Maggie - a horribly abused young woman with a one-month-old baby, fleeing from her abuser. Title: Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker: Recipes for Two
Author: Beth Hensperger
Like me, you might be looking for a book of slow-cooker recipes targeted to a couple, not a crowd. If so, avoid this book -- I made the mistake of buying it (and have since trashed it). The recipes look and sound good, but nearly every recipe calls for exotic (not easily found) ingredients and wines -- not just wines, but expensive wines (the author does not care for the reasonably-priced versions). Unless you're wealthy or have all day to run around hunting down exotic ingredients, skip this one!

Several popular musicians appeared on the DVD paying tribute to Glen Campbell and his amazing career. Title: The Shoemaker's Wife
Author: Adriana Trigiani
I loved this book. I have read several of Adriana Trigiani's books and this one was one of my favorites. The story is set in the Italian Alps when the book starts. The main characters are Enza and Ciro who meet when they are teenagers. They are immediately attracted to each other. They both end up going to America but neither one is aware of it. They eventually meet each other in America but circumstances separate them once again. As the jacket cover says "it is a historical epic of love and family, war and loss, risk and destiny". Once I started the book, I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.

Until I read this book, I had pushed to the back of my mind the horrors of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 1990s, although I lost many loved ones to that disease. Sean Strub lived through that era and was hospitalized and walks away from death when the first, life-saving "cocktails" of AIDS drugs were made available. He recounts the many years of activism and struggle for government recognition of and funding for HIV and AIDS. The book contains many fascinating anecdotes of his interactions with political and public figures, including Andy Warhol, Tennessee Williams, Keith Haring, Bill Clinton, and Yoko Ono.

A must-read for anyone interested in or touched by addiction in its many forms, or (often related) mental conditions like bi-polar and depression. Mr. Kennedy's personal story is very compelling, and he relates it with thoroughness and candor. The long and hard-fought battle to achieve parity for the treatment of mental and addictive conditions -- in government policy, in insurance coverage and in the court of public opinion -- is detailed thoroughly. The author is candid in discussing his well-known family -- father Ted Kennedy, mother and acknowledged alcoholic Joan Kennedy -- but thankfully, without salacious details and only to further inform the dialogue on addiction (genetic or family histories, etc.)
