Rafe Kendrick's wife and two young children were killed in a car accident two years ago; causing him to escape the pain by becoming a drunken, box-car riding bum. Along the way, he meets Maggie - a horribly abused young woman with a one-month-old baby, fleeing from her abuser. Plot concerns Rafe's redemption through caring for Maggie and her baby; her slow evolution to an attitude of less fear and more trust; and the ultimate showdown with her crazed tormentor.
